With her new album, "S (Yes)," (BMG), Mexican singer Julieta Venegas seems to be saying yes to love and happiness, a radical shift from the brooding, difficult-chick persona that fueled her previous work. The jittery P.J. Harvey-like cacophony of songs such as "Hoy No Quiero (Today I Won't)" from 2000's "Bueninvento" has given way to sunny norteo ballads like "Andar Conmigo (Walk With Me)." On the title track of "Bueninvento," she's filled with dread and anxiety about inner changes, but "S's" "Algo Est Cambiando (Something Is Changing)" is drenched in soaring, feel-good harmonies.
The ultra-feminine cover art of "S" carries some irony, picturing Venegas in semi-sexy poses in a white wedding dress against a hot- pink background. But although in some shots she reveals a black bustier and flashes fishnet stockings, in others she engages in the standard bouquet toss....
