Known for its ice rink and towering Christmas trees, Rockefeller Center - one of New York City's showpieces - can now claim a new distinction: Its subway station is the dirtiest in Manhattan.
The New York City Transit Riders Council, a 15-member transit group that represents bus and subway riders, surveyed 50 subway stations in New York City, ranking them from worst to best.
"Rockefeller Center is one of the stations that received an F for its litter condition," said council spokeswoman Ellyn Shannon. "It's a deterrent from ridership, sending a message the stations are uncared for."
The 47-50 Rockefeller Center station was cited for leaking ceilings, water on the floor, unclean walls and floors, and, of course, litter. Other problems included incomplete passenger information centers, missing service notice frames to indicate rerouted service, broken telephones...
