The $167-million rehabilitation project on the Queensboro Bridge has been halted pending completion of an investigation to determine what caused Tuesday's fire on the structure, officials said yesterday.
"We have stopped the contractor from working until we can assess what caused the fire and what measures we need to take," said Kay Sarlin, a spokeswoman for the city's Department of Transportation.
A Fire Department spokesman said the cause is undetermined. Police sources have said the fire may have been ignited by an overloaded lighting fixture, but Sarlin said transportation officials have "no knowledge of that."
