Sleek, silent and silicon-chip-powered, the AirTrain to Kennedy Airport is seeing record ridership this year, reflecting soaring passenger growth, officials say.
About 11 percent of all travelers arriving at or departing from Kennedy use the computer-operated AirTrain, according to its operator, the Port Authority.
"People do realize it is the easiest way," said Patty Clark, senior adviser for external affairs in the authority's aviation department.
Daily paid ridership on the elevated rail linked to four subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road rose to nearly 11,300 a day last month, compared with 7,700 a day in June 2004.
Nearly four times as many people are taking the AirTrain for free each day to travel between the airport's eight active terminals and parking lots, officials said.
