After nearly a quarter-century as a floating museum, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is set to undergo around a $55-million, 18- month renovation, including plans to demolish and reconstruct the pier where the World War II aircraft carrier is docked on Manhattan's West Side.
"This ship will never again sail under its own power," said Arnold Fisher, chairman of the board of the Intrepid Foundation, at a news conference on the USS Intrepid's deck. "But understand that it lives and it breathes every day."
The museum will remain open at Pier 86 until Oct. 1....
