Considering all the struggles of 2008, pop experimentation wasn't high on the priority list. Instead, the year's best pop songs either offered moral support - don't we all feel like we've been dodging shoes chucked at our heads for a while, now? - or reasons to keep going.
Here are some of the best:
1 Weezer, 'Pork and Beans' (Geffen): Clever as ever, Weezer somehow crafted a multigenerational protest song out of references to Rogaine, Timbaland and a killer guitar riff that only improved with repeated listenings. "I'mma do the things that I wanna do/I ain't got a thing to prove to you" = words to live by.
