It's a slower pace out here in the grasslands, for sure, but not nearly as slow as it's supposed to be.
Legacy Parkway's speed limit is 55 mph, but state records show motorists routinely exceed that standard by more than 10 mph. When they do, they're violating not just a law but a court settlement that appeased environmentalists and allowed the state to build the road. Slower traffic is quieter, protecting nesting birds in the Great Salt Lake's wetlands.
Legacy's four lanes in south Davis County opened in September. The 55 signs went up, but state patrols did not. Traffic sensors soon clocked average speeds in the 60s.
That sounds a bit slow to regular Legacy commuters Dan Stewart and Beccah Thomas. The two stopped to snap photos at the Legacy Nature Preserve's 500 South wetlands viewing area Wednesday afternoon during their drive between Layton and Salt Lake Community College in Taylorsville....
