Strapless, backless, sleeveless -- today's revealing formalwear leaves many Utah teens dressless come prom time.
But while others lament the dirth of modest gowns on department store racks, two 17-year-old, first-year students at Brigham Young University are doing something about it.
Liz and Alisa Christensen, twin sisters from Leawood, Kan., and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led a campaign to encourage retailers to carry less showy attire.
The effort, hatched last summer by their LDS Church young women's group in Kansas, has generated a groundswell of support from teens across the nation frustrated by the fashion industry's push for plunging necklines and bare midriffs.
It also caught the eye of a group of Nordstrom buyers, who heard the girls' plea and have started placing orders for more modest frocks, which now grace store racks in seven central states. The Christensen sisters say they might target Utah stores next.
