Ron Howard, who recently bowed out of directing the screen adaptation of John Grisham's "The Chamber," reports that the film still will be made - likely this summer - by his Imagine Entertainment.
He revealed that the company is having discussions with other directors now, and also said, "It's a strong story, and William Goldman (`Maverick,' `Chaplin') is doing great work on the screenplay." He credited his retreat from the project to "just a hunch," and added, "I'm throwing all my energies into `Apollo 13' now."
He's working night and day editing the thriller, set for a late June release, based on astronaut Jim Lovell's book about the near-disaster of the Apollo 13 mission. Howard told this column, "The special effects aren't even in place yet, but the response is gratifying from people who have seen very, very rough cuts of the picture. People get emotionally involved with the story, which is not surprising. When you read about this mission, it's riveting, and utilizing special effects and terrific actors, we're able to give people a sense of what it was like being in a capsule trying to go to the moon."
