Despite recent statistics showing that subway crime is up, anew study of crime suggests that the underground transit system isnot nearly the violent jungle the public fears. Serious crime - murders and rapes - is much more likely to happen on the streets than under them, says the study, conducted by the Criminal Justice Agency, a nonprofit consulting organization hired by the city. The crimes that do occur in the subway are almost always robbery or theft, and rarely result in bodily injury.
