Roosevelt Island residents face longer commuting time if the 63rd Street subway is not in operation by 1988 and an additional 1,100 apartments are built as scheduled, according to an environmental impact statement released yesterday by the State Urban Development Corp.
The construction of five additional high-rise apartment buildings at an estimated cost of $134 million will raise the island's current population from about 2,800 to 5,100 people, according to the statement.
At present, the only direct service between Manhattan and Roosevelt Island is the aerial tramway, and the statement notes that "...
