Still reeling from recent events, the N.C. State Ports Authority is moving quickly to right its ship three weeks after the state auditor released a critical report that eventually cost the ports' top official his job.
Monday the ports' board of directors discussed tightening the authority's regulations regarding credit cards and travel expenses and moving ahead quickly with the search for a new chief executive officer.
The Ports Authority, which runs facilities in Wilmington and Morehead City and inland terminals in Charlotte and Greensboro, has been without a top official since Erik Stromberg resigned April 1.
That move came a week after a scathing report questioned the authority's financial oversight.
Mr. Stromberg was highlighted in the report for traveling to the 2003 Gator Bowl with his two sons - and charging the expenses to the port - and driving down to Jacksonville, Fla., in a state vehicle.
Although Mr. Stromberg eventually repaid the money because no port business was discussed on the trip, the handling of the incident bothered several board members.
