Bird-attracting wetlands north and west of Salt Lake City International Airport will not be paved over with concrete.
State road builders have abandoned a proposal to extend the southern end of the West Davis Highway around the airport's west side.
Instead, they are considering alternatives that tie the new roadway -- the first phase of Gov. Mike Leavitt's Legacy Highway -- into Interstates 215 and 80 east of the airport.
The Davis highway segment would begin at a still-to-be-determined point in northern Davis County and run between I-15 and the Great Salt Lake before connecting with I-215 and I-80. During the next 20 years, the Legacy Project calls for a new 126-mile roadway between Box Elder County and southern Utah County.
