WASHINGTON -- The Energy Department, getting the go-ahead from a federal judge, said Monday it will send its first shipment of plutonium-contaminated waste to a permanent dump in New Mexico later this week.
Those canisters will come from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, but federal officials also expect the judge's ruling to clear the way for waste from the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) to also be shipped by a critical April 30 deadline.
