"Never eat in the hotel" may still stand when on holiday abroad, but British hotels often have the most highly-rated food around. Gone are the days when most smelt faintly of roast lamb and rang to the clank of a wilting dessert trolley. In the 1994 Michelin Guide, two of only three London restaurants which received two stars are run by big-name chefs in grand hotels (see right).
