SUPER Mario, the internationally famous plumber, yesterday appeared in "virtual reality" when Kyoto-based Nintendo unveiled its new three-dimensional video game machine. But critical fans sniffed that it was not yet full-colour reality.
With the appearance of the Virtual Boy machine, Nintendo has taken video games from hand-held children's toys into the hi-tech equipment league. The player's face is pressed against a screen which has two light-emitting diode displays that cut out other sources of light, giving a 3-D effect, and a speaker for each ear for stereo sound.
