Johnathan Carver's Travels Through America, ed and int Norman Gelb (Wiley, pounds 11.99)
CARVER journeyed into the interior of America from 1766 to 1768, befriended a branch of the Sioux and, after initial mutual suspicion, was made an honorary chief. You can see why. He's a keen observer, he's far-sighted, has a lot of respect for the natives and goes to great lengths to scotch colonists' scare stories about cannibalism and the devilish nature of their dances. Great sentences like "The town of Detroit contains upwards of one hundred houses."
