The sights, smells and sounds of an early Christian village came to life in St. Charles this week in a Vacation Bible School for children and adults. "Antioch 49 A.D. - The Christian Church at Antioch" was set Tuesday through Thursday on the shady lawn of First United Methodist Church on First Capitol Drive.
The village consisted of 15 crafts, food and game areas. A storyteller spun parables on the portico of the church as musicians wandered among the crowd singing psalms accompanied by a guitar and flute. Biblical figures told of their conversions to Christianity at a brick well in the center of the bustle.
In the first half-hour of each session, participants from preschoolers to grandparents met in groups, where they were taught about one of the ancient cities, such as Rhodes, Athens or Philippi. They were each given a passport and a money bag.
