What do you call churches that boast graffiti instead of banners in their sanctuaries?
How about "artistically sensitive?" Or "creatively contemporary?" Perhaps "locally aware?"
Still not sure how to answer that question?
Well, for faith communities in and around Naperville and Lisle, the handwriting is on the wall. Literally.
Several churches and other institutions have solicited the artistic skill of internationally-renown calligrapher Timothy R. Botts to draw Scripture murals on their walls.
They include Good Shepherd Lutheran, Cornerstone Church, Naperville Bible Church, Trinity Church of the Nazarene, St. Francis High School in Wheaton and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
The result is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
As with monastic scribes in the Middle Ages who devoted their lives to illuminating with color and design hand-lettered copies of the Holy Scriptures, Botts approaches his "ministry" with no less devotion.
The arabesques of his brushes and the pirouettes of his pens give life to letters and wings to words.
