Pauly Shore - yes, that Pauly Shore - has pledged to send a dollar to anyone who watches his new show, "Minding the Store," and fails to laugh.
And I have to admit, having seen the premiere, much as I'd like to take Shore up on his offer - I figure he owes me a lot more than a dollar for all the time I spent watching MTV trying unsuccessfully to fathom his intangible appeal - I can't. Truth be told, he doesn't have a whole heck of a lot to do with it, but yes, I laughed - quite a bit actually. This isn't a bad program, and considering it has Pauly Shore in it, that's saying something.
Debuting at 9 p.m. Sunday on TBS, the former Ted Turner superstation that has been trying to redefine itself as a comedy channel, "Minding the Store" is a reality series starring, of course, Pauly Shore. He's learned some humility since his career imploded under the weight of "Encino Man," "Jury Duty" and "Bio- Dome," but it's still all about him.
"I used to be on top of the world, but now - not so much," he admits.
It turns out Shore really is the son of Sammy Shore, the standup comic who founded Los Angeles' famous Comedy Store in 1972, and Mitzi Shore, who got custody of the club in a later divorce and guided it through the standup craze of the '80s and '90s.
