Seven consortiums are interested in bidding to design, build and operate a new sewage treatment plant serving the Hutt Valley.
A new plant costing $50-60 million is planned for a site in Seaview. Work is expected to begin mid-1999.
The plant has to be built because it is no longer acceptable to continue to discharge untreated sewage into the sea at Pencarrow. At present, Hutt Valley sewage is only sieved before being pumped along a pipeline along the Eastbourne coast to an outfall at the harbour entrance.
