Wellington's port company CentrePort will spend up to $50 million rejigging its facilities, including building new wharves, storage sheds and a fishing jetty.
The plan - which could take up to 10 years to complete - aims to make maximum use of the port's 47ha site, which extends from the Kaiwharawhara reclamation to Waterloo Quay, opposite Wellington railway station.
It would make 4ha of land - largely bordering Waterloo Quay and including the main port offices - available for lease.
