It's about as filthy and toxic a mix as anybody would care to work in but somebody has to do it.
Environmental scientists Doug Sheppard and James Goff are wading in the sludge of Waiwhetu Stream, taking core samples to determine just how badly polluted the waterway still is, more than 20 years after it was closed down as Lower Hutt's industrial sewer.
The last kilometre of the tidal stream - where it runs into the Hutt River mouth - is reputedly one of the worst, if not the worst, polluted waterways in New Zealand.
The stream runs from Naenae to Seaview.
