It will cost up to $5 million to clean up a 500m section of Lower Hutt's Waiwhetu Stream, known as the most polluted in the country.
An environmental investigation has found 30,000 cubic metres - 100,000 tonnes - of heavily contaminated sediment in the stream bed between the rail bridge just north of the Hutt Park Holiday Village and Seaview Rd.
It also showed lower levels of contamination in the section of stream north from the park to the bridge at the foot of Wainuiomata Hill and south of the park to Hutt River mouth.
