LAST century, when big trees often remained where they fell, a log that looked like a cannon when viewed from below was left on top of a hill above Upper Hutt.
The hill, which became known as Cannon Point, was part of Valley View Station, farmed by the Whiteman brothers, and a steep zigzag track was cut for foot and horseback access.
Cannon Point is now the 364-metre-high point on a 10-kilometre- long regional council walkway, which includes the zigzag track.
