Sabra Sounds
With so many new record releases this holiday season, it is difficult to decide which albums are worth purchasing immediately, and which ones can be left until the bank account is replenished.
One disc that fans will not hesitate about is the latest release from the bad boy of Israeli rock, Aviv Gefen. Gefen's mellow and reflective music always seems to stir the senses of music lovers young and old and Yoman Masa (Journey) is no exception.
Gefen's rough cut voice is still powerful and his melodic tunes leave no doubt as to the reason for his rise to the heights of stardom.
Despite similarities in style to his previous offerings, Gefen's latest collection does bring some pleasant surprises. There is clear evidence on Yoman Masah that the young rebel has grown-up since his last album, Lailot Levanim (White Nights).
The greatest improvement is in Gefen's dreamy lyrics. While in the past, he morbidly sang about his own feelings and traumas, on Yoman Masah Gefen has dedicated much of his words to other people's hurt.
The move from his usual self-centered, pitiful, whining not only marks a clear shift in Gefen's approach to his music, it is also a welcome change. Gefen must face the fact that he is no longer an icon of the younger generation and he must...
