INAUGURATED only last year, the New Voices series of festival commissions, featuring composed works by mostly young Scottish roots artists, already stands out as one of Celtic Connections' most exciting elements.
The first in this year's trio of works, performed on each of the Sunday afternoons, was Tuath gu Deas by Andy Thorburn, the multi- talented pianist, composer and arranger also to be seen backing the Blazin' Fiddles and in the Songhunter band. Approximately translating from the Gaelic as North to South, it was written (with text by Aonghas MacNeacail) for 12 unaccompanied voices, and given its premiere performance by an array of Scotland's finest singers, including Christine Kydd, Jim Malcolm, Elspeth Cowie, Alyth...
