WITH new albums from Noisettes, The Hours, Fightstar, Camera Obscura and hotly tipped newcomers The Virgins, this is an exciting week. A reissued Specials Best Of, however, overshadows everything.
ALBUMS The Specials: The Best Of The Specials
THE Specials only recorded two studio albums before disbanding in 1981, yet their influence is still felt today and the re-formed outfit played at Newcastle Academy last night. The fact their recent reunion wasn't badmouthed, shows the kind of regard music fans hold them in.
Here's a reissued collection of the Coventry two-tone outfits best work, with added DVD of live performances. It's all here, from the startling debut of Gangsters, A Message To You Rudy, Too Much Too Young and of course, the era-defining single Ghost Town, which, even nearly 28 years after its first release, sounds otherworldly and, like much of their music, written at a time of mass unemployment and growing financial crisis, still totally relevant.
