I really thought I was going to have to start this week's column mourning the loss of one of my top three favorite new shows of the season: "Reaper." (The other two, "Chuck" and "Pushing Daisies," were safely renewed months ago.)
I was happily stunned and ecstatic when earlier this week at the upfronts, where the networks announce their lineups for next fall, the CW announced that it would be renewing "Reaper" for a second season.
The show has been on the bubble all season, and I was trying to prepare myself for what I thought was the inevitable. Granted, it's only a half-season order (13 episodes), but I'll take what I can get.
The CW and I had a falling out last spring when the channel decided to ax my newfound favorite, "Veronica Mars." I only watched the channel's new shows this season as part of my research. Judging from their synopses, I didn't expect to like any of them.
Thus, it was a pleasant surprise when "Reaper" turned out to be a whole lot of fun.
True, it's got a supernatural aspect with the whole "capturing escaped souls from hell" thing, but the show is honestly not as weird as that phrase makes it sound. It's got a very twisted, off-the-wall humor that if that's your thing (which, admittedly, it's not everyone's), then you can't help but laugh.
The cast is truly excellent, too. Bret...
