Mary Grieve OBE, former editor, Woman magazine; born April 11, 1906, died February 19, 1998 In 1987, the magazine Woman celebrated its golden anniversary. The editor at the time wrote: "That it survived at all to enjoy its present unquestioned strength and stability is due overwhelmingly to the efforts and foresight of one woman. Her name is Mary Grieve."
Strength and stability are what Mary Grieve gave to many people, even in the long years of her final illness. She could give rather than demand.
Born in Ayr of a quiet, church-going family, she passed her school days in Glasgow and Edinburgh. When she was 17 she spent some months in Switzerland, and after that went to secretarial college in London where she learned shorthand and typing.
