It will come as a surprise to those avid golfers in Troon that one of their own, Iain Steel, has made it to the PGA Tour.
By his own admission, Steel, who played out of the Wellbeck Club, was an iffy three-handicapper unable to make the slightest impact on the Scottish amateur scene.
However, nine years on he is living the dream, competing against the men he once idolised. Steel, 27, the son of a Scottish soldier who married a Malaysian while stationed in the Far East, was undaunted at his lack of progress.
"When I left Strathallan School at 18, I was not a good player but it did not help that the weather and practice facilities were poor in Scotland.
"After a couple of years I decided to go on a golf scholarship to the USA, figuring that I'd get an education if nothing else. At Auburn University in Alabama my game improved because I could play and practice as much as I wanted.
