This is by no means to hint at undue influence or anything other than mere coincidence, but as Phamie Gow's New Voices commission, Lammermuir, unfolded, I couldn't help recalling Richard Rodney- Bennett's Far From the Madding Crowd soundtrack. Both works evoke lonely, rolling landscapes, use cor anglais to express isolation early on, and involve both song and sheep, although thankfully in Gow's piece the sheep enjoy an altogether happier fate.
