Today a column of items for those whose attention span has been shaped by television.
{} There are signs the audience is finding CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" on independent station WDJT-TV (Channel 58).
The first night the show earned a dismal 1.4 rating, due in part to the delay caused by a speech on Iraq by President Clinton. On Tuesday, however the rating jumped to 3.3. "Matlock," which replaced "Late Show" on WCGV-TV (Channel 24), earned a 1.4 rating on Tuesday.
If you have a hard time picking up the WDJT signal, you can hear an unexpurgated version of Letterman's Top Ten list Monday through Saturday at 6:55 a.m. and 3:38 p.m. on WTMJ-AM (620) and at 6:15 and 9:15 a.m. Monday through Friday on WKTI-FM (94.5).
{} CBS won its first prime- time victory in the weekly ratings race this season, by a slim margin, a 12.1 rating over a 12 rating for NBC and a 10.9 for ABC.
CBS' victory was driven, in part, by the 11th-ranked "Country Music Awards" and by "Chicago Hope," which jumped from 59th place opposite NBC's "E.R." to 31st place, after CBS moved it opposite "Seinfeld."
Apparently bouyed by the achievement and believing in the show's quality, CBS has ordered nine more episodes of the hospital drama totaling a full season's worth of 22 episodes.
"E.R," meanwhile, continues its steamroller success, ranking 4th last week.
