Last-minute talks have averted strike action planned for today on Highland bus routes that would have meant 1,400 pupils having to miss school.
But union leaders stressed last night that they could not rule out a future stoppage if a settlement was not reached soon.
About 200 Rapsons staff, mostly bus drivers, had planned a 24-hour walk-out that would have brought chaos today.
Highland Council is one of Rapson's biggest clients, and a spokesman said the strike would have meant 1,400 pupils on 27 routes having to miss school.
