IT was before the time of foodies - an era when menus could consist of Spam and chocolate sponge.
But in 1963, the year when President Kennedy was shot and the Profumo scandal was rocking Britain's political establishment, a new venue was about to open in a picturesque Yorkshire setting which would, over the following 45 years, yield some of the biggest names - and best dishes - in cooking.
Then, for the princely sum of 32s 6d, (or Pounds 1.63 in modern money), people more used to bread and dripping could indulge in food which, for its time, was viewed as cutting edge.
Half a grilled grapefruit, a prawn cocktail, or a melon boat were dishes which may not tickle everyone's tastebuds today, but which, in a time when stodge was more common, were ahead of their time.
Today, as part of the famous Box Tree at Ilkley restaurant's 45th anniversary, celebrated chef Simon Gueller has recreated the 1963 menu to give diners the chance, for one week only, to go back in time.
