It's been one of the most public family feuds in film history - a father-daughter spat played out before millions. In one corner, there's veteran Midnight Cowboy actor Jon Voight. In the other is beautiful, if eccentric, Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie. And their falling out, which has taken place across TV shows and magazines all over America, now seems to have reached the point of no return.
It all went horribly wrong last year when 64-year-old Voight - whose new film Holes is released this week - appeared on the primetime US chatshow Access Hollywood. He revealed to the nation that his daughter was suffering from "serious emotional problems". He then wrote to Angelina, 28, accusing her of being a bad mother.
Yet if Voight hoped the Tomb Raider star would seek help after his astonishing outburst, he couldn't have been more wrong. She immediately banned him from seeing her adopted three- year-old Cambodian son, Maddox, and announced that she no longer viewed them as being father and daughter.
And so, until the pair make up, Voight is reduced to following his daughter's life through the pages of magazines, and watching the grandchild he has never met grow-up in the pages of the glossies. Despite the fall out, he remains optimistic - perhaps bewilderingly so - that they will be reconciled.
"A lot of things have been said but the most important thing to say is that I love Angie," Jon states firmly. "As anyone will tell you, she is the most delightful person and I'm her No 1 fan.
"One hopes that whatever has happened in the past, we will have years of happiness ahead. Whatever I have said or done, her well- being had always been...
