KEVIN Rudd has been swept to record-high personal approval ratings for a prime minister, outstripping Bob Hawke and John Howard, as an overwhelming majority of Australians come to support his apology to the Stolen Generations.
According to the latest Newspoll, conducted exclusively for The Australian at the weekend,69 per cent of voters said they supported the apology, including 46 per cent of Coalition supporters.
But almost the same number of voters, 64 per cent, said they did not support financial compensation for members of the Stolen Generations.
Only 30 per cent supported compensation.
Since Mr Rudd steered the apology through parliament, voter satisfaction with him has reached a new high of 68 per cent,allowing him to open the biggest lead over an Opposition leader in the history of Newspoll.
While there was no real change in the party votes in the past month, Mr Rudd's leadership standing continued to soar, while Brendan Nelson became the first Opposition leader...
