SIX years in the planning, the world's first commercial datacast service is about to be launched on regional TV around Australia.
Southern Cross Broadcasting, owner of the Ten Network's regional affiliates, will use its spare digital TV channel capacity to datacast a new service and plans to rent TV spectrum eventually to provide the service in capital city markets.
The datacast "channel" is essentially a hybrid of a TV channel and Southern Cross's new website mytalk.com.au.
TV viewers in regional areas will be able to access the digital TV channel, which looks like an enhanced electronic program guide as it features global and local news, TV listings and blog and forum topics.
