FOREIGN Minister Alexander Downer yesterday welcomed an announcement that part of the notorious Changi prisoner-of-war camp will be preserved. Changi, still used as a jail, will be demolished to make way for a huge correctional complex due to open next year. A 180m stretch of the original prison wall, including two corner turrets, will be saved, along with the main gate. "Changi prison is of immense historic and emotional value to many Australians, particularly those who were interned there during World War II and their families," Mr Downer said. He said the Singapore Government had shown sympathetic understanding of Australian interests.
