Hidden Torah to be given new life
A chance discovery and an international ecumenical effort will give new life to a Torah that was hidden during the war in a house in Poland, and has recently arrived in the Chicago area.
Last October, Lincolnwood resident Gerald C. Bender learned there was a Torah for sale in Lomza, that came from the town's main synagogue.
Bender has a special interest in Lomza, a town in northeast Poland in the vicinity of Bialystok, for it was the town where his father Morris was born and raised, and which he left in 1923.
It is also the town where other family members, who did not leave, were murdered during the Holocaust.
