How Did Svorinich Lose? Voters Express Reasons
Just how did it happen, in his hometown-San Pedro, Rudy Svorinich was trounced by Alan Lowenthal, losing by a 3-to-1 margin in the race for the 54th District Assembly seat?
Days after the election, the question of Rudy's defeat was posed to random shoppers roaming the booths at San Pedro Old Town Farmers Market. The reasons given for Svorinich's defeat were mixed, but the voters interviewed were clear on one point, and they either admire Rudy or despise him.
Some argue Harbor Area voters have been ignored throughout the years and feel that politicians once elected, seemingly forget the issues and concerns of the community. On that point for many people, Rudy is guilty.
Dave Lynch, owner of Sacred Grounds Coffee House, a familiar pit stop in San Pedro was critical of Rudy's public service, saying, "The Daily Breeze gave a lot of excuses for why Rudy lost. But the real reason is that he made a lot of enemies by not doing much. There is a lot of frustration for what he hasn't done."
In the window of Sacred Grounds was a familiar Lowenthal campaign sign, one of many still displayed by businesses along Sixth and Seventh streets. It's easy to see that Lowenthal has made his presence felt. Crossing the bridge from Long Beach to San Pedro several times before the election, and walking door-to-door and shaking hands in various neighborhoods was a pleasant task for Lowenthal.
