Local college radio station wins national award while providing sound education
Nobody at Kennedy-King College's radio station WKKC-FM (89.3) knows exactly how or when it happened, but last year's unplanned site inspection by the National Association of Black College Broadcasters (NABCB) recently earned them an award for Black College Radio Station of the Year.
"There was no advance planning. They didn't call anybody," said a still surprised and delighted Zoraida Sambolin, Director of Broadcasting at Kennedy-King College. "They just came in and managed to get up to our radio station, and we'd love to know how they did it. They told whoever was on the air that they were recognizing the Black college radio convention, and that they'd like to observe, and that's what they did."
"We actually just went to this year's NABCB convention (in Atlanta) for the information and participation," said WKKC-FM general manager James Kelly. "And we were sitting there at the dinner, and they called our name out as station of the year."
WKKC-FM received the award, the NABCB said, because of the station's involvement in community service. On the air since 1975, the station currently supplies the south side of Chicago's hunger for hip-hop and contemporary/ traditional gospel music, while educating its audience and staff.
"In this community all the gospel programs serve the audience," said station manager Reggie Miles. "Gospel music weighs heavily here....
