Gay Activist George Choy Is Dead At 33: He did much to raise awareness on. issues the Asian community would rather hide
Fundamentalist Christian leaders from the San Francisco Chinese community verbally slugged it out with gay Asian youths at a pivotal meeting in the spring of 1990, at which the San Francisco Board of Education was to vote on a measure to provide counseling services for lesbian and gay youths in public schools.
"There is no such thing as a gay Chinese," a Chinatown minister roared.
The rejection from their own community was a catalyst empowering the youths to turn their backs on the clergy leaders. As the religious leaders fired a verbal volley of disparaging comments, the youths shielded their ears and held up neon rally signs, YES ON PROJECT TEN.
The opponents had had their say. Now it was the other side's turn.
