And the Winners Are: APIA Literati Comes Out for 4th Asian American Literary Awards
On Nov. 2, the Asian American Writers' Workshop held its fourth annual Asian American Literary Awards in Manhattan at the Lighthouse International auditorium.
"All the winners and finalists tonight challenge our notions of Asian American Literature," Workshop Trustee Holly Kim said to open up the ceremony.
Emcee and Workshop Executive Director Quang Bao took the podium next, following up with thanks and praise to those who made the night possible, ranging from readers to staff to donors.
Before getting to the awards, the night's keynote, architect Anooradha Raman, delivered an impassioned and obviously rehearsed speech on the World Trade Center destruction, contextualizing the event through an explanation of the rebirth from violence. Citing biblical and mythological evidence, she attempted to sell her tired theme to the audience of writers by pointing out their role in the rebirth and rebuilding.
