Crisis averted with Okanagan Nation.
Good news from the northwest region of Turtle Island! A second Wounded Knee (for those south of the 49th) and another Oka Crisis (for those north of the 49th) was avoided when a potentially violent conflict was resolved through mediation.
The Okanagan Nation has successfully reached a landmark protocol agreement with a settler government which recognized their inherent aboriginal rights to protect their traditional territories.
Since 1977 the Okanagan have consistently objected to and resisted development in this area. However, the Apex Corporation, through a land use agreement with the B.C. government, planned an extensive expansion of the Apex Ski Resort which sits in the middle of the area known as the Seven Peaks.
