Four Winds Review of; The Conquest of Paradise: Christopher Columbus and. the Columbian Legacy
I am not an expert on anything and I like to read. I also like to share what I read. That's what this column is about, sharing thoughts, feelings and reflections on books (or recordings) pertaining to the lifeways of the North American indigenous people.
I cordially invite readers of News From Indian Country to share with me by writing in to the newspaper anything you care to add, suggest or comment on regarding this column. Diverse and contrary opinions welcomed. Thank you.
I would like to mention in this opening column that 1992 is the quincentennial, the year which marks the time 500 years ago when native people first discovered plaefaced men wandering about near their shores in three craft that may have been at the mercy of the wind and tidal currents.
These hairy & pale men seemed overdressed for the clime and had looks of wonder on their faces (wondering where they were?). So the gentle native people took pity on them and greeted them generously and welcomed them to their homes.
Some of my selections of books for this quincentenary year will reflect upon native and non-native perspectives of the clash of very differing cultures that has occured since that first encounter. Vine Deloria Jr. has stated that the Indian situation is not a good one, but so far they have survived and will continue to do so. I have chosen for this column those books which I consider not only entertaining and informative but those that will further increase awareness of the "Indian situation"... I hope that my selection of books and comments of them over the course of this quincentennial year will inspire some of you to read them and share with me a fresh...
