African drums are more popular in the forest regions of West Africa than in the tree-less savanna areas of southern Africa. Musical instruments often show a close link between sculpture and music, as well as life and spiritual events. Some of the drums that are at the African American History Village are:
The Rasta drum and Ashiko type drum from Ghana with a goatskin head and the Djembe sound.
The Donno and Dondon from the Dagomba people. It is held in the armpit and played with a curved stick. Squeezing the strings with the arm produces different tones. The strings are meant to be loose when not being squeezed, to allow access to the full range of its tones. This unique instrument is from Burkina Faso. Held under the arm, is it played by means of a curved drumstick, and squeezing the strings that run lengthwise changes the pitch. This drum is also called the Talkingdrum.
