JACKSON, Miss. -- Lawrence Arthur Jones, Head, Department of Art at Jackson State College, has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as an artist and a teacher. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jones struggled from the grasp of poverty to become one of the top seventeen Black Artists known today.
Early in life Jones attracted the interest of well-to-do friends in Lynchburg, including Senator Carter A. Glass. He was encouraged by these friends to attend the Chicago Art Institute where he graduated with distinction in 1937. That same year he entered Dillard University graduating in 1940. Following graduation, Jones taught at Dillard for one year.
