Abemathy would consider violent movement
ATLANTA--Rev. Ralph Abernathy, who succeeded Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, says he would "give serious consideration" to a "violent movement" if blacks weren't the only ones killed as a result.
"I'm not saying that I would join it," Abernathy said, but he would "really study it.
"We have a lot of rhetoric about violence and that's all we have. If there is a program of violence that would really move into areas other than the black community, burning down the black community and killing the black people -- which has been the history so far -- then I would give serious consideration to that movement."
He said, however, that he thought blacks would be annihilated if they launched a violent movement now.
Female, black Rep. stands up for women
AUSTIN, Texas -- Rep. Senfronia Thompson says she called a fellow colleague's remarks "racist and sexist" to destroy the attitudes that led to the comments from the white lawmaker.
Ms. Thompson, who is black, told reporters that her speech on the floor of the Texas house of representatives was prompted by Rep. C.C. Cooke, who made the remarks.
