There's an old expression in the library world that you can't judge a book by its cover. For decades that has been especially true of Brooklyn's Central Library, a grand building, incidentally shaped like an open book, that has for many years suffered at the hands of sharp-knifed politicians when it came to funds. Now the library is taking full part in what has been called the Brooklyn Renaissance, launching a $16.5 million renovation of its outdoor plaza and a new auditorium, which was designed when the library was first built in the early 20th century but never completed for lack of funds. The move will mirror a recently completed renovation of the Brooklyn Museum down the road on Eastern Parkway and will inspire even more Brooklynites and perhaps even a few Manhattanites to come down to Grand Army Plaza to take a look.
